Here you will find a list of palms that grow in Sacramento and similar environments. This is an extensive list, with links to the Palmpedia.net site. We have selected those varieties that are known to us to do well in our area, either personally or from others' experiences. This list excludes the more common varieties you find in the big box stores, or local nurseries.
There are several orchids that grow outdoors in Sacramento, either in pots or mounted on trees. While they may not always look as good as a well grown greenhouse specimens, their glorious blooms provide a tropical look for your garden. We've selected a small sample to get you started.
Don't stop with palms and orchids! A wide variety of tropical appearing plants can grow will in our climate. We've selected a few that can transform your garden into a piece of Hawaii, or perhaps tahiti, right in your own back yard.
Native plants should be easy, right? Since it's California, all I have to do with natives is just " Set it and forget it!" Right?
Wrong! Just because a plant is native does not mean it is carefree! Remember that California has many very distinct climate zones. Check out Marlene Simon's article on growing California natives, then go to the Las Pilitas Nursery's Questions and Answers for native plants.
